Mirza Asadullah Khan (Ghalib)-27-12-1797(Agra) To 15-02-1869 (Delhi)
Interpretation-Ghazal-39
1.
you cruel beloved, turned out not to be anyone's friend,
You showed a special kind of cruelty to others that happened with me.
(I realized that you did not use as much cruelty to me as now you are using toward others. You intend to kill two birds with one stone.)
(Cruelty is preferable to neglect.)
2.
Considering it deficient and useless like the "Moon Of Nakshad",the hand of creation dropped it,
Although the sun had still not become equal in perfection to the face of the beloved.
(The "Moon Of Nakshad" was artificially made, was an inferior copy of the superior original, and fell apart after a short life span.)
(Ghalib compared the sun with the beloved's face, and found it deficient. For that he produced the simile of the "Moon Of Nakshad".)
3.
To the extent that someone has a lofty courage, his help from the unseen is proportioned,
The proof is that the tear-drop,which has found place in the eyes,if its courage, when it was in the sea,had contended itself with becoming a pearl.
(The courage of the pearl-drop is less than that of the tear-drop.For this reason,it can reach as far as the ears(Ear-rings),not as far as the eyes.)
(To find a place in the eyes, means very dear.)
(How excellently tears have given preference over pearls.)
4.
As long as I had not seen the style of beloved's stature and spectacle of her gait,
I was not in my heart convinced of the affliction of Doomsday.
(The mischievous beloved's stature itself is the height of the mischief of Judgement Day.)
5.
Just consider my simple-heartedness,I am happy that the beloved has been vexed,
Because in that situation I have more chance to repeat the lesson of ardor.
(What the life of passion is like? Inescapable, painful, yet fascinating and no devoid of pleasure.)
6.
In committing sins my enthusiasm is so capacious that although the sea of sin has dried up,
Still not even the edge of of my attire has become wet.
(However many sins there were,I committed them all, even with that,I had not had my fill.)
(My garment hem had soaked up the whole of ocean of sin and still was hardly even damp, and I remain eager for more chances of sin.)
7.
Through the wound in my liver I have held dominion,
Since a time when in fireplace the Salamander had not even born.
(Salamander is a creature like mongoose. It is born in fire.)
(Ghalib used Salamander for his dominion and the fireplace for the wound.)
(He has given priority to the wound.)
(Because of the wound those sighs and laments emerge, they are my jurisdiction. So wound in the liver is my estate, when Salamander did not obtain this benefit from the fire place.)
(It is up to you readers. Imagine fire or sacred fire.)
