Interpretation-Ghazal-21
1.
There was one thing I wanted, the union with beloved, but destiny denied it,
Since waiting is more painful than death, it is good that I died.
(Even the longing, hope, vision of it is enough to sustain you your whole life, and would sustain you longer if you were destined to live on.)
2.
When I said,I have escaped dying only because of hearing the promise of union, you knew it was false,
Having heard your promise, if I kept on living, the reason was that I considered it a false promise.
(You can not claim that you ever fooled me, I know you too well.)
3.
Your delicacy forbids promise-breaking, with such delicacy, when you broke the promise, then I realized that the promise had been loosely tied.
If it had been strongly tied, then you could not have broken it.
(How excellently he has reproached the promise-breaking, and comforted his heart.)
4.
If the arrow of your coquetry had been released with full force,then the heart would have been finished off in a moment,
And I would not have become acquainted with the relish of tension and pricking of passion.
(If the arrow had pierced the heart it would have put me out of my misery at once.)
5.
Every friend has become an adviser and exhorts me to renounce passion,
If the claim of friendship had been observed,they would have treated the pain of my passion and thought of ways to resolve the damage of grief.
(The countenance of the style is worth seeing. Ghalib says that the friends have become advisers.)
6.
From rock-veins to blood would flow in such a way that it would never again be able to stop,
If what you consider to be grief were a spark.
(It is a substance even more inflammatory than a spark, that only human being can endure, rock has no strength to bear such grief.)
7.
Be grateful that the only grief of passion was bestowed upon you,
If there were not the grief of passion,there would be grief of the world.
(Grief of the glory, luxury of the world.)
(In any case grief of passion is a piece of luck.)
8.
I endure the suffering of passion and then I do not die,
But during the night of grief I am compelled to die a thousand of times.
(Is the death essence of the night of grief or is it sought as a final refuge from it.)
9.
After death I remained the very essence of a suspicious character, if I had drowned in the sea,
Then neither would a funeral procession formed nor would the memorial of a tomb have remained.
(No funeral procession to generate the gossip, no tomb to remind people of his notoriety and shame.)
10.
If he were not a oneness,and there were even the smallest glimpse of duality,
Then certainly he would have been visible somewhere.
(Ghalib has given a proof of the oneness of the true beloved from his not being meet-able.)
(If the sky and earth there were more Gods in a addition to God, there would certainly be turmoil.)
(Theology is impeccable and also witty.)
11.
Ghalib has been asked about his wine-drinking and has replied with question about Sufism,
To which the speaker replies,"These question of Sufism,Ghalib? We could have considered you a saint, if you had not been a wine-drinker."
(We know how long Ghalib's poetry will live.)
"WATCH OUT IF ANY BODY TANGLES WITH [GHALIB],
THE SAINT IS HIDDEN AND THE INFIDEL REVEALED."
