Mirza Asadullah Khan (Ghalib)-27-12-1797(Agra) To 15-02-1869 (Delhi)
Interpretation-Ghazal-19
1.
Last night my ardor had stirred up a doomsday,
From here to sea of wine had become picture-house of my yawn.
( While waiting for the cup-bearer, the wine in the flagons too, like me began to stretch{ Agitated }.)
2.
In the state of wildness,I had taken the very first step, when the truth of the possibilities was revealed,
As if it was the binding-thread of the pieces of the path of the worlds.
( When the love set out into madness, the lesson of possibilities fell apart into incoherence;this was inevitable, since the path of madness itself was now the only binding-thread that could hold the two-world's desert together.)
3.
Who forbids Laila to come out in madness toward Majnu in the desert,
Now I understand, Majnu was mad, how can he stay in one place,If the poor thing came, where would she come.
( It can be confidently concluded that Laila does not have the kind of madness of passion that Majnu does.)
( Masterful use of Ghalib's device.)
4.
How can I describe how much disgrace there was for the claims of beauty to non-indebtedness,
The beautiful ones claim that their beauty is divinely given, we have no need for adornment. We have always seen them making henna designs on their hands, and colour of rouge glimmering on their cheeks.
( Beauty pretends to be independently wealthy, but it is all false front. In fact, it is all based on borrowed finery.)
5.
The piece of my heart, that is my lofty themes, which used uncontrollably from my tongue in the form of laments of the heart,
Now when I collected my thoughts and looked, the memorial of the lament was a single unbound Ghazal-collections.
( Lament of the heart is the frustration of poet, gathering its pages only to disperse them, collecting them only to fling them to the wind.)
( The pages that are given to the wind are the pages of the fragments of the heart.)
